We're proud of the SANDALWOOD we use in Simplicite products.
As with all our ingredients it's of the highest quality available - it helps dry and sun damaged skin - and by the way, also soothes shaving rash.
But we've had to change from where we source our sandalwood because of ecological issues.
With 4000 years of traditional use, sandalwood has earned a reputation for helping skin complaints and revitalising the appearance of the skin.
It promotes tissue regeneration and is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent.
A few years ago we began moving away from sandalwood sourced from India. Many of the trees there, while protected and controlled by the government, were being illegally cut down.
We made a decision to not use sandalwood oil from India, or Nepal, as the sandal oil trade has become ecologically harmful through overharvesting.
We use West Australian Sandalwood with very high 'santalol' levels. As usual, there are a few grades available.
This heavenly oil is produced from wild-grown timber harvested by an indigenous community in WA; they hold a license to harvest the wood.
It's all done under a sustainability management programme set up by the Department of Environment & Conservation.
And here's another happy outcome...it turns out that the community is paid a premium price for their timber because of the quality of their produce.
Wood collected from WA trees is heavy, yellow, and fine-grained. Unlike many other aromatic woods, sandalwood retains its fragrance for decades.
Back in the 1840s sandalwood was Western Australia's biggest export earner. At one time the oil produced was said to be of a lower quality but this has now changed with improvements in extraction and production to make the quality of the oil up there with the finest available.
Nothing like a clear conscience - while you're improving your skin.
